Protecting Your New Sod: Chinch Bugs, Fungus, and Proper Watering
To ensure your new sod thrives, it’s important to be proactive about potential issues like chinch bugs, fungal diseases, and proper watering techniques.
- Watering Schedule (Crucial for Root Development):
- For the first two weeks, water your new sod every day, preferably in the early morning, for approximately 45 minutes.
- For the following two weeks, water every other day for the same duration.
- After this initial period, you can begin mowing and water your lawn regularly as needed.
- Fungal Protection (Especially Important During Watering):
- New sod receives a lot of water, which creates ideal conditions for fungal growth. It’s essential to apply an anti-fungicide like Armada or Heritage during this frequent watering period to prevent fungal diseases.
- Chinch Bug Prevention:
- Chinch bugs can become active starting around mid-June. To protect your lawn, we recommend applying a contact insecticide such as Bifenthrin or Sevin (liquid formulations are generally more effective). This will eliminate any existing chinch bugs and help prevent future infestations.
- Where to Get Supplies:
- You can conveniently order these products online or visit local stores like Site One or Big Earth. Consider exploring generic options for more budget-friendly alternatives.
- Fertilizing Your New Lawn:
- It’s crucial to allow your new sod’s roots to establish before applying granular fertilizer. Please wait approximately 30 days for the roots to “tack down” before fertilizing.
- Mowing:
- After the first 4 weeks of watering as described above, your sod is ready to be mowed.
